Growing a Home

Running out of home space is a common occurrence. The problem is that while growing families tends to happen organically, growing houses takes a bit more concentration and effort. But there are always solutions to the problem of not enough space. Moving. Kicking out the largest person. Or building an addition onto your house. And if you happen to be like this homeowner, you might find building an addition to be the better option, especially if you have a carport that you can simply convert into a bedroom suite for your mother. With, of course, our help.

Step one was pouring concrete on top of the existing carport to make the addition’s floor level with the rest of the house:

Next we closed up the the space where the old carport had been and installed Window Mart® vinyl windows:

And then covered it with Alside® vinyl siding:

Interior view of the framework:

We used Knauf® batt insulation for the walls:

We installed drywall on the interior ceilings and walls, except for the walls that are exposed brick:

And the interior is completed, with Sherwin Williams paint on the walls, ceiling, and trimwork:

We installed DreamWeaver® carpet on most of the floor:

But in the foyer hallway, we installed Shaw® waterproof vinyl plank flooring:

The interior doors are Masonite® 6-panel:

For climate control, this homeowner chose a Lennox® mini-split AC/heat unit:

In the bathroom, the vanity received a marble top and we also installed the
Shaw® waterproof vinyl plank flooring in here:

We used Interceramic® tile for the handicap accessible all-tile shower:

Stepping back outside, we see that while the homeowner converted his original carport into more home space, that doesn’t mean he no longer has a protected place to park his vehicles. The concrete pad was already there, so we simply built a roof over it for him:

Installing the Tamko® 3-tab shingles in the Rustic Cedar color:

And the new carport is complete, with the new home addition tucked behind it:
